The stim session sensation is too strong or uncomfortable.Updated 8 months ago

It's normal to feel a tingling sensation or see light flashes during the stim session. These effects are harmless and stop as soon as the stimulation ends.

However, if the sensation feels too intense or uncomfortable, there could be a few reasons:

  • Your electrodes are dried out
    • Make sure you replace them every 3 nights (on the 4th day), whether you use them in sessions or not.
    • After you finish your session, make sure you remove the flex clip from the headband and place it on the charging mound with the electrodes gel-side down. Gently press the electrodes onto the mount to protect them from particles and drying out between sessions.

  • Hair or particles may be interfering
    • Check to ensure that particles haven't gotten stuck to the hydrogel electrodes.
    • Make sure to pull back your hair before putting the Somnee flex clip on the headband and gently pressing the electrodes onto your forehead.

  • Skin creams and moisturizers may be interfering
    • Some creams and moisturizers are conductive and can make stimulation painful. Hyaluronic acid-based moisturizers are generally fine to use with Somnee. However, we recommend washing your face with water and fully drying it to make sure it's clean before your session.

  • Electrodes may not be making full contact
    • Gently press the electrodes down so they make full contact with your forehead.
    • If you can feel stimulation when you press the electrodes down against your forehead, but don't when you let go, your headband could need adjusting. Try tightening the headband so it's snug, but still comfortable. Make sure the button on the bottom of the headband is aligned with the bridge of your nose.

  • A pre-existing skin condition
    • If you have pre-existing skin irritation near where the electrodes make contact, Somnee could further exacerbate the skin irritation. Please stop using Somnee until the irritation fully clears.

  • Stimulation intensity
    • You can reduce the intensity of stimulation in the Somnee App settings. Don't worry -- you can choose the most gentle intensity setting without affecting how effective your nightly stimulation is.
